Title : l'Asie divisée en ses Empires et Royaumes. [Wall map ].
Map maker : ROBERT DE VAUGONDY, [Gilles & Didier].
Date : Paris, [Charles François] Delamarche, ca. 1791.
Size : 38.6 x 44.3 inches. / 98.0 x 112.5 cm.
Colouring : In original o/l colours.

Description :Rare large wall map of Asia, originally published by Gilles & Didier Robert de Vaugondy in 1767 or 1775, and here by Charles François Delamarche, who had succeeded to their materials and revised many of their plates. It is more than a meter wide.
The lovely cartouche, drawn and etched by J. Arrivet for Robert de Vaugondy, measures about 23 x 27 cm and shows Asian plants, animals, products and buildings. With a grid of parallels and meridians (prime meridian through Isle de Fer) and numerous scales.

Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy, father and son, were among the most important and innovative cartographers of the eighteenth century, carrying on where De L’Isle left off, and this wall map, printed on four large sheets, is among their most impressive work. Charles François Delamarche (1740-1817) acquired their plates from J. Fortin in 1784, and reprinted many of their maps, some with revisions. Since the map does not refer to “Citoyen” Delamarche as some of the related maps do, he may have revised the plates before the French Revolution.
They were printed together soon after, however, he left the address in the map in 1804 or 1805, and the paper suggests a date around 1791/92 (laid paper, watermarked: P [heart] SERVE/LARSENAL = arms, see Gaudriault, p. 268).

Not in Sweet Asia. BMC Printed Maps XII, col. 269 (1775 ed.). not in IKAR. OCLC WorldCat.
Condition : Large folding wall map, with the title in a large cartouche with pictorial decorations. Folded in contemporary boards covered with blue paste-paper. With minor foxing, browing and stains, but still in very good condition. Lacking the back board and spine.
