KAEMPFER,E. - Imperium Japonicum.. Antique map published in The Hague 1727 (18.1. x .20.9 inches. 46.0. x .53.0 cm.) Good condition. Upper margin cut short as issued. The most important influence on European maps of Japan during the early years of the eighteenth century was that of E. Kaempfer based upon the manuscripts compiled during his 2 years residence on Deshima between 1690 and 1692. One of the main points of interest is that the names of the provinces are not given in romanized version as on previous maps but also in Chinese characters. The map includes a dedication to Sir Hans Sloane, in an inset detailed maps of the regions to the north of Japan and a table of distances from Japan to other countries of the world. Campbell 48: Cortazzi plate 76: OAG 76.
