Title : A New & Exact Map of Europe With the Prospect of Its Principal Citys After The Latest and Best Obseruations. . ..

Date : London, 1738.
Size : 15.7 x 15.3 inches. / 40.0 x 38.8 cm.
Colouring : In original colours with possible some

Description :This rare highly ornamental wall map is one of Overton's splendid creations. The map shows Europe during the time of Louis XIV. Europe is flanked by sixteen large detailed views of important cities: London, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Constantinople, Lisbon, Seville, Antwerp, Venice, Frankfurt, Prague, Cologne, Copenhagen, Krakow, and Danzig.
Richly detailed and hand coloured, this expansive European map is a historical picture of Europe's political, and social climate during the 1700'
In the seventeenth century, The Thirty Years War carved out the main ruling powers and their subsequent territories in Germany. Just twenty years before this map was engraved England, the Dutch Republic, and France were involved in the Wars of Spanish Succession over who would take over the Spanish Throne. Overton's Europe is that of Louis XIV's, the longest ruling monarch in history (72 years). Made during the century that saw the culmination of thought and reason through the Enlightenment, as well as political change through the French Revolution,
Overton's map is an excellent historical resource in its reflection of the current state of Europe. One can see that in Northern Europe, Finland has yet to become an autonomous country, it is still part of Sweden. Overton's eye for detail has included an exceptional number of cities and geographical feature.
Overton includes an inset over 'Part of Africa,' which stats 'Printed and Sold by Henry Overton at the White Horse. . . Newgate Lond'
This workshop had also been his father's and was considered to be the most notable and powerful print seller in London. While is it unclear when this map was published, it must have been sometime after Henry'??s succession into the family business in 17

English cartography rose to prominence at the turn of the 18th century, and one of Britain's most celebrated cartographers was Henry Overton. One of seven children, Henry Overton was born in 1675/6. His father, John Overton, was an illustrious London publisher specializing in cartographic prints. Through industriousness and business acumen John Overton had managed to acquire his stock of plates, as well as his own shop, from Peter Stent in 1665, after Stent died from the plaque.
In 1700, John acquired John Speed’s plates from Christopher Browne, who in turn had purchased them from Bassett and Chiswell.
Henry inherited the business and all its holdings in 1707. An adept business man himself, Henry successfully managed his father’s contracts, as well as added new enterprises to the family publishing firm.
Not limited to cartography, Henry also published the more popular prints of the day on topics such as horse racing and hunting. He reissued John Speed's County Maps in 1713 and 1743, a Plan of London in 1739, and contributed to Bowen’s Royal Atlas in 17

Despite Overton's excellent credentials, many of his works were cheaply distributed by other lesser known printers reappearing in pamphlets and rag sheets. It wasn't until 1735 when the first copyright laws were established in England that such practices were curtailed.

As a wall map its survival and exceptional quality is rare. Most maps were printed in bound form, thus protecting them for environmental factors, like light and humidity, as well as carelessness. Overtons large map survives with its vivid original colour in pristine condition. Not only does this map provide the collector a historically important map of Europe, it is a fine showcase for the cartographic engraving skills of Henry Overton and his workshop.
Condition : Good impression.
