Fourth edition, translated by Willibald Pirckheimer, with an additional treatise, and enlarged indices by Konrad Wolffhart, generally known as Lycosthenes, with privilege of King Henry II of France, Paris 1552. A fine copy with beautiful wood cut maps. The map of America is in Burden's 6th state. The modern world map is from a new block and bears the monogram of the engraver David Kandel in the lower left-hand corner (Shirley, Mapping of the World 92).
Sebastian Munster was to become one of "the most influential cartographers in the sixteenth century" (Burden). Essentially he published Ptolemy's "Geography" with a "further section of modern, more up to date maps. He included for the first time a set of continental maps, the America was the earliest of any notes. He was one of the first to create space in the woodblock for insertion of place-names in metal type. The maps' inclusion in Munster's "Cosmography" sealed the fate of "America" as the name for the new world. The book proved to be very popular, there being nearly forty editions during the following 100 years."

In the back are the modern maps; and only these maps in this rare 1552 edition feature coordinate bars provided at top and bottom. A large distance scale is at bottom and the title is in the top margin of each map. This map only appears in a few editions of Munster's Cosmographia, and is therefore uncommon. The title on verso of most maps have a beautiful woodcut border, probably cut by Albrech Dürer.

Provenance : Johann Josef Schmidhalter (1752-1830). Student in Brig 1770 and Novara 1773, Rector in St. German 1782-1790, pastor of Stalden 1790-1796, director of the seminary in Gerunden 1799-1805, pastor of Ems 1805- 1827, then Résignât in Brig.
