Description
Botocudo (from Portuguese for botoque, a plug, in allusion, to the wooden disks or plugs worn in their lips and ears), is the foreign name for a tribe of South American Indians of eastern Brazil, also known as the Aimorés or Aimborés.
Engraved by Fumagalli and closely copied after a print earlier published in Maximilian, Prinz von Wied (1782-1867) in "Travels in Brazil, in the years 1815, 1816, 1817."

Published in Milan by the author between 1816 and 1827.
This aquatint engraved plate was color printed on fine wove paper with additional hand-coloring.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
