The shogun and his canon

The shogun Iemitsu Tokugawa wrote in 1639 to the daimyo of Hirado: Three years ago, the Dutch chief gave me a glittering chandelier, with which I was delighted, and I have now received a splendid and extraordinary cannon that is truly an ornament to our country. The Dutch introduced heavy artillery into Japan. There were cannons on board of the Liefde and an apocryphal story tells that they were used in the decisive battle of Sekigahara.
It is more certain that naval guns were used in the siege of Shimabara (1638).
