Description
Uncommon large-scale map of Berbice with Rio de Berbice and Rio de Canje, with at the bottom left a list of plantation owners. In the top 3 x 3 coats of arms in cartouches. The map was prepared by Jan Daniel Knapp.
Shows the Berbice River Valley and the plantations along the river; also shows the family crests of various landholders. "Naamlyst der eygenaars van plantagie gelegen aan rio de Berbice en rio de Canje in de colonie de Berbice", printed in the lower-left corner of the map, lists the names of the landholders. Oriented with north to the upper right.
The colony, founded in 1627, was originally fully privately owned by the Van Peere family from Vlissingen. Major losses, partly as a result of an attack by French privateers (1712), forced this Zeeland family to sell ¾ of their property to the firm of Van Hoorn & Co.
He decided to issue shares and founded the Society of Berbice in 1720 for this purpose. The nine coats of arms on three shields belong to directors, seven of whom were chosen from among shareholders.
The number of plantations expanded very quickly after that.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
