Description
A chart of the bay of Batavia with, in the lower-left corner, a plan of Batavia (120 x 147 mm). This very rare and influential chart gives a fine representation of Batavia, now known as Jakarta, and its surrounding maritime landscape. Presented as a sea chart of the coastal regions opposite Jakarta. The chart is made and signed by Gerard Van Keulen, and offers a comprehensive the environs of Jakarta during the late 18th century, with detailed soundings off the coast of the City of Batavia (based on feet), a detailed entrance to the harbor via a narrow channel through a shallow reef and the "Moeras" opposite the harbor.
The chart features an inset in the lower left, providing a closer look at the urban layout of Batavia. The main map, meanwhile, extends beyond the city to include a variety of small islands and reefs.
One of the key features of the map is the depiction of the fort at Onrust Island, a significant site during the Dutch colonial period. The map also includes other constituent islands of the Thousand Islands, a chain of islands to the north of Jakarta's coast. These features underscore the strategic importance of Batavia and its surrounding waters during the era of European colonial expansion in Southeast Asia.
At the time the map was published, Batavia served as the administrative and commercial center of the Dutch colonial empire in the East Indies. This map, therefore, serves as a valuable historical document, capturing the geography and urban layout of Batavia at a time when it was a hub of trade and colonial administration.
As the official mapmaker for the VOC, Gerard van Keulen had exclusive access to the secret, tightly guarded logbooks and charts returned by Dutch sea captains.
The full roadsteads extended all the way from the Krawangse to the Ruige Hoek [Rough Hook] or Ontong Java. Including all the islets within, this area was under the authority of the Commander of Provisions, in his role as chief of the navy.

Gerard van Keulen (1654-1715)
The van Keulen family operated a chart-making and publishing firm in Amsterdam for nearly 200 years. Johannes van Keulen founded it and registered his business as a "bookseller and cross-staff maker". Under his management, he began the Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Faakel (New Shining Sea Torch) in 1681. It expanded to five volumes, then finally to six, adding material from the East India Company's secret files. In 1693, van Keulen acquired Hendrik Doncker's stock. In 1678, Johannes registered with the Amsterdam Booksellers Guild as a "bookseller and Cross-staff maker." By then, most Amsterdam chart makers and instrument makers, like Blaeu, Janssonius, Hondius, Goos, and Doncker, had either closed down or were at the end of their fame. As a result, Johannes van Keulen could obtain copperplates, privileges, and stocks from many of his former competitors.
Gerard van Keulen was a son of Johannes van Keulen and Louysje Laurend Coerte. On October 7, 1712, Van Keulen was granted a patent for ''Het gilded licht der Zeevaart''.
Van Keulen acquired the stock of Blaeu's sons and inherited the privilege of working as mapmakers for the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie. He continued publishing Blaeu's globes.
He takes over the family business from his father in 1714. After his death, his son and his widow continued the business.
