Description
Large map of Yemen from "Allgemeiner grosser Atlas" published by P. J. Schalbacher - 1786-1800. Based on the observations of the Danish explorer Carsten Niebuhr and shows the eastern shore of the Red Sea just to the north of Jizan. Numerous towns, cities, and Wadis are shown interlaced in the dense hachuring to suggest topography.
The Red Sea is filled with three compass roses, fleur-de-lis and rhumb lines. In the lower left an index gives latitude and longitude for the major cities.
At upper right is an elaborate title cartouche with three distance scales below.
Yemen was known to ancient civilizations as Arabia Felix ("Happy/Fortunate Arabia") for its fertile highlands and control of lucrative incense and spice trade routes. The Kingdom of Sheba (Saba) flourished there roughly 1000 BCE–275 CE, famed for the Marib Dam, one of antiquity's great engineering feats, and linked in legend to the Queen of Sheba's visit to Solomon.
Islam arrived in the 7th century, and Yemen later became a patchwork of imamates and sultanates, notably the Zaydi Shia imamate in the north, which endured in various forms for over a thousand years. The Ottomans and British both took interest in Yemen from the 16th–20th centuries — the British controlled Aden as a colony/protectorate (strategically vital for controlling the Bab al-Mandab strait), while the north remained under Zaydi imamate or Ottoman influence.
Yemen has been divided since 2015 between the Iran-backed Houthis controlling the north, including Sana'a, and an internationally recognized government now called the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) in the south. A ceasefire had frozen the front lines since 2022, but the situation has sharply deteriorated in 2026.
Franz Anton Schrämbl (1751-1803)
Franz Anton Schrämbl was born in Vienna and set up a bookshop in Vienna in 1787 in partnership with Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly (1766–1820), another Viennese publisher. His great work is the "Allgemeiner Grosser Atlas" (also titled Allgemeiner Grosser Schrämblischer Atlass), published in Vienna. It is a massive elephant-folio atlas, begun in 1786 or 1787 and completed in 1800 after about twenty years of compilation and composition. It is considered the first Austrian commercial world atlas. The maps were meant to be based on the most up-to-date cartographic information available, drawing on cartographers such as d’Anville and explorers such as Cook.
Although it was a notable work, the atlas was lavish and expensive, did not sell well and had a low print run. This makes it considerably scarcer than other European atlases of the period. The low sales and high production costs nearly drove Schrämbl into insolvency. In response, he diversified into literature and art books. Succession After his death in 1803, the firm was taken over by his widow, Johanna, and her brother, the engraver Karl Robert Schindelmayer (1769–1839). From 1825 it was run by Schrämbl’s son, Eduard Schrämbl.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
