Description
A view of the Overtoom in the eighteenth century. Etching on two joined sheets of paper, after A.Rademaker. By the eighteenth century, numerous country villas had been built along the Overtoom, one of the main canals linking Amsterdam to the river Schinkel, as well as pleasure gardens and numerous alehouses and shops.
Complete title : "Gelegen buyten de Leydsche Poort der Stad Amsterdam te sien naar de groote en kleyne overhaal. Vüe agreable de l'overtoom, hors de la porte de leide, pres de la ville d'amsterdam…"
The Overtoom gained its name from the machine used to move a boat from one body of water to another, where the levels varied. In other canal systems, the boat would be physically pulled across land rather than using a lock. The machine, consisting of two large wheels, is depicted to the right of the print. It can be seen pulling a small boat onto the canal.Â
Leonard Schenk (fl.1720-1746) was an Amsterdam engraver, mapmaker, and publisher. Abraham Rademaker (1677 21 January 1735) was an 18th-century painter and printmaker from the Northern Netherlands. Rademaker was born in Lisse. According to the RKD, he was a versatile artist who painted Italianate landscapes, but he is known mainly for his many cityscapes and drawings of buildings that were made into prints.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
