Description
The lovely title page from Homann's Grosser Atlas uber de Gantsa Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World)with striking color and features. It shows Atlas and Hercules / Herakles heroically supporting the starry night sky and the heavens in their upturned hands.
To their left you see the morning sun, and birds heralding the dawn of a new day to chase away the night.
These two colossi stand on an earthly globe showing the continents of Africa and Europe. In the foreground are mythological and allegorical figures; some sit while others stand.

These figures include Poseidon or Neptune with his Trident, Ceres / Demeter with a scythe in her hand and a wheat sheaf, plus the relaxed figure of Mercure / Hermes with a chicken between his legs. Other figures represent the winds that shape the world's weather and guide mariner's ships across the oceans, or beset others with tempests and storms.

Behind Neptune / Poseidon is his queen, and she holds a galleon in her hand, representing expeditions and voyages of discovery to far away lands yet to be explored. Around the title and publishing credits are fruits and produce. A Lion is seen passively asleep.

For many years beautiful frontispieces and decorative title pages have been overlooked, as they are not maps per se, but more recently collectors have woken up to their potential as aesthetically pleasing items in their own right.

Authenticity Guarantee
Certificate of authenticityWe provide professional descriptions, condition report and HiBCoR rating (based on 45 years experience in the map business)
We fully guarantee the authenticity of items we sell. We provide a certificate of authenticity for each purchased item.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
