Description
Very decorative, egg-shaped map. This is the last and very rare third state with the signature Theodorus Galle. The fortifications along the Scheldt River are added and the entire plate was touched up (information supplied by Mr.F. Gittenberger).
The lady with a pointed hat and two ships in the North Sea. Map of Flanders from the 1584 Latin edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas of the world. This map, which was first included in the Ortelius atlas in 1579, is based on the work of Gerard Mercator as stated in the lower left. Unusually shaped in an oval, the map is decorated in strapwork panels to each corner indicating the compass position, sailing ships and a women holding grain in one hand and a coat of arms in the other.
Dare to go in Black. All early maps are printed in black and white and many were kept that way for a long time. A black and white map in an early and strong impression is a rarity now-a-days being so many colored up recently!Read more [+]

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
