Description
Wood engraving published in "Katholieke Illustratie", showing the match factories of Mennnen en Krunen in Eindhoven. Founded in 1870 by banker Christiaan Mennen and his brother-in-law Everardus Keunen. The partners started their business in 1870 on Bergstraat.
Ten years later, Vissers and Langemeijer on Vestdijk also started a match factory, a company that was taken over by Mennen & Keunen in 1884. The activities are concentrated on the Vestdijk. In 1885, the match factory with around nine hundred workers (with many homeworkers) became the largest employer in the city.
In the second half of the eighties, the match factory went through a difficult period. Mennen & Keunen blames the decline on the closure of borders to which more and more countries are moving. The nineties are a lot sunnier.
After a merger with distressed match factories elsewhere in our country, the name is changed to Vereenigde Nederlandsche Matchifacts with headquarters in Eindhoven.
In 1900, only three hundred workers together produced 75 million boxes of matches. Six years later it was decided to leave the center of Eindhoven and to build a new factory on Lijmbeekstraat in Woensel. In 1907 the production can be transferred to the new location.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
