1946 ATLANTA SERVICE - Map of Germany and Austria showing the Allied occupation zones as agreed at the Potsdam Conference after the end of the Second World War
Description
A poster map of Germany and Austria showing the Allied occupation zones as agreed at the Potsdam Conference after the end of the Second World War, with an inset detail of the zones of Berlin. The map also gives the new postal codes, with all titles and text written in English, French, Russian, and German.
The map shows the territories administered by the American, British, French, and Soviet occupation authorities, distinguished by color, along with national, regional, and district boundaries. The newly introduced German postal districts and postal codes are prominently indicated in red. An inset map shows Berlin divided into its four occupation sectors.
Issued by Atlanta-Service of Frankfurt am Main, the map was intended for practical use in the immediate post-war period, when Germany's political and administrative geography had been fundamentally reorganized. The title and explanatory text were printed in several languages—German, English, French and Russian—reflecting the multinational Allied administration. The Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation dates the map to 1946 and records a contemporary price of one Reichsmark.
The map is particularly interesting for combining the newly established occupation boundaries with the contemporary postal system, providing a vivid cartographic document of Germany during the brief transitional period before the creation of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic in 1949.
With an inset map of Berlin and its Allied occupation sectors.
This is the unusual editio printed by Karl W. Schilling, Heilbronn.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
