Description
The first printed survey map of Finland, composed by the Swedish cartographer Anders Bureus (1571-1661). The map was published in 1662 in the second volume of Joan Blaeu's "Atlas Maior". At the time of the publication Finland was a grand duchy of the Swedish Empire.
The map was dedicated by Blaeu to the Swedish nobleman Gustav Horn (1592-1657), governor of the south-eastern territories Kexholm en Ingermanland.
From the very rare Spanish text edition.
Nicolas de Fer (1646 -1720)
de Fer was a French cartographer and geographer. He was also an engraver and publisher. His work prioritized quantity over quality; it often contained geographical errors and leaned more toward art than accuracy. De Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, a cartographer. At 12, he apprenticed under Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx and made his first map of the Canal du Midi at 23. After his father's death in June 1673, his mother, Geneviève, initially took over the map-making company, which had begun to decline. She passed it and the atelier, called Quai de L'Horloge, on to Nicolas in 1687 because of her old age.
He is known for producing over 600 very maps.  The beauty of his maps was enough to get Nicolas de Fer a royal appointment as the geographer for the French Dauphin, the Duke of Anjou.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
