Homann Heirs / Homannianische Erben (Nuremberg, 1730–1848)
The "Homannianische Erben" was the successor firm to Johann Baptist Homann’s map publishing house; the principal Nuremberg map publisher of the middle and later 18th century.Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724) founded the firm in 1702, and it became the most prominent and prolific map publisher of the 18th century.
After his death in 1724, the firm’s plates and management passed to his son, Johann Christoph Homann (1703–1730). Knowing he might not long survive his father, Johann Christoph stipulated in his will that the company would go to his two head managers, Johann Georg Ebersberger (1695–1760) and Johann Michael Franz (1700–1761). The will also required that the firm publish only under the name Homann Heirs.
The firm drew on Homann’s large stock of plates and added new maps and updates. Maps were produced by a circle of Nuremberg and other German mathematicians and cartographers.
The firm published in 1752 the "Maior Atlas Scholasticus ex Triginta Sex Generalibus et Specialibus Mappis Homannianis" of 37 maps and charts. Most early Homann atlases were made to order or compiled from individual maps at the buyer’s request, but this one was issued as a “suggested collection” of essential maps. The firm also published the Atlas Homannianus (Amsterdam, 1731–1796) and the Atlas Geographicus Maior (c. 1780). Celestial work: the 1742 Atlas Coelestis, based on Doppelmayr’s work, appeared under the Homann Heirs imprint (see the Doppelmayr / Homann entry).

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
