Description
This very interesting early engraving shows the ships of the Dutchman Van den Broecke, who in December 1628 left his directorship in Surat. Before returning to Batavia he first sailed with a fleet to the Persian city of Gamron, present-day Bandar Abbas, opposite which lies the island of Hormuz. After arriving in February 1629, Van den Broecke visited the governor at the castle of Hormuz and stayed here for some time.
Panoramic view of the town of Hormuz, with little inset map of the island.
From the French reissue of the account of early Dutch voyages first published in 1608 by Commelin. The French translation was carried out by René Augustin Constantin de Renneville, entitled >Recueil des voiages qui ont servi à l'établissement & aux progrès de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales formée dans les Provinces-Unies des Païs-Bas. . .. Page 179 in upper left corner.
The plate shows a panoramic view of Hormuz. Hormuz was captured in 1507 by Alfonso de Albuquerque and remained firmly in Portuguese hands from 1515 to 1622. Due to its position on the Strait of Hormuz - one of the most important straits in the world - at the entrance to the Persian Gulf, 16 km off the coast of Iran, the rocky island remains an important strategic location and a major centre of trade for the Arab world.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
