Description
Striking map of the region centered on the Lower Danube, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Macedonia. Includes decorative cartouche, coat of arms, etc. Latin text on verso.
The cartographer of this map was Gerard Mercator.
As Willem Blaeu died in 1638, most of his maps were actually published by his son Joan. This map bears his (engraved) signature and was actually published in volume II of a French edition of his "Le Theatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas", dated 1638, thus published in the last year of his life.
From early on, Willem Jansz. Blaeu aimed to publish an atlas to compete with the Hondius-Jansson Atlas. By 1630, he had published at least 17 folio-size maps. Blaeu was able to realize his plan soon after acquiring the copper plates of the atlas maps from Jodocus Hondius. The "Appendix followed in 1630.
In 1635, he finally realized a "international edition" of a world atlas, the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum".
This example is from a very rare 1638 French text edition, which has the same copperplates as the 1635 edition; the text on the verso was reset in two text columns.Â
This edition is the last version the great master printed under his patronage.

We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
