Description
A very impressive Victorian 20-inch Library globe is showing the "Gulf of Corea."
On an exceptionally carved mahogany tripod stand with scrolling acanthus legs terminating in sharply carved lion’s paw feet joined by turned stretchers centered by a compass. With paper scale and blued steel needle inscribed NEWTON and SON Chancery Lane London.
The terrestrial globe is finely marked with the latest discoveries of the period.Â
The globe is of interest for using the sea between Korea and Japan, here called "Gulf of Corea". [+]
Published 1st January 1867, made up of twelve engraved paper gores on plaster sphere, with continents lightly shaded, countries outlined, coasts hatched and colored, densely labeled with major towns, rivers, lakes, mountain ranges and deserts, North America divided into states and territories, California shown as a peninsula, Northern California labeled New California, the Russian Empire spanning Europe and Asia.
The oceans are marked with the tracks and dates of various expeditions, including the three voyages of Cook, Biscoe and Gore, Clerke's voyage on the Resolution additionally marked with sightings of fauna in the North Pacific Ocean, the names of Pacific islands and the dates of their discovery labeled.
The Antarctic is labeled with observations of ice during Biscoe's 1831 expedition, the Equator or Equinoctial Line calibrated in degrees, hours and fractions, the Ecliptic by days of the month and Zodiacal signs, with Improved Analemma, and Meridian passing through Greenwich.

The Newton family of cartographers was among the leading English globe makers of the 19th Century. At the beginning of the century, several members of the Newton family were active as globe makers in London, mainly at 66 Chancery Lane (at first 97 Chancery Lane).
The exact family relation is not quite clear. The founder was James Newton (born in 1748). John Newton (1810-1868) is possibly a son of James or George Newton. The firm was one of London's most prestigious firms and produced specially made-to-order globes with stands made with great craftsmanship.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
