ANTIPHONER. – Liturgical manuscript with musical notation.
An antiphoner is a liturgical book containing the chants sung during the Divine Office in the Christian monastic and ecclesiastical tradition.Antiphoners were produced for use by choirs and normally contain the antiphons, responsories and other chants associated with the canonical hours, arranged according to the liturgical calendar. Because a group of singers had to read the volume simultaneously, choir books were often made on a particularly large scale and written in a bold, easily legible hand.
The text is typically written in Latin, with the musical passages accompanied by square-note notation on a four-line stave. Larger initials, often executed in red, blue or other pigments, mark important feast days and divisions within the liturgy. More elaborate examples may include penwork decoration, historiated initials or painted miniatures.
Such volumes were expensive objects to produce, requiring substantial quantities of parchment or high-quality paper, and were made for cathedrals, monasteries and collegiate churches. Their large format, musical notation and evidence of repeated liturgical use make them both visually striking and historically evocative survivals of medieval and early modern religious practice.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
