Description
An important and lavishly illustrated architectural and urban-planning publication presenting the celebrated “Plano Agache” for Rio de Janeiro, prepared during the administration of Mayor Antônio Prado Júnior (1880–1955) under the general direction of the French architect and urban planner Donat-Alfred Agache (1875–1959).
Commissioned by Prado Júnior in the late 1920s, the project was conceived as a comprehensive plan for the extension, remodeling and beautification of Rio de Janeiro. Agache approached the city as an integrated urban organism, addressing circulation, sanitation, zoning, housing, public spaces and monumental architecture. The plan paid particular attention to the redevelopment of the city center and proposed grand civic spaces, new avenues and extensive improvements to transport and infrastructure.
Published in Paris in 1930, the volume is profusely illustrated with photographs, architectural perspectives, diagrams, plans, maps and folding plates, several printed in color. Contemporary descriptions note that the complete work was printed on heavy paper and was dedicated to Brazilian president Washington Luís. The Swaen example comprises 323 pages plus XCIII pages of supplementary material.
The “Plano Agache” is generally regarded as one of the earliest comprehensive master plans for Rio de Janeiro and an important landmark in the development of modern Brazilian urbanism. Although political changes following the Revolution of 1930 prevented the plan from being carried out in its entirety, many of its concepts—including zoning, road planning and the functional organization of the city—continued to influence later urban projects in Rio.
A particularly desirable work for collections devoted to architecture, city planning, Brazil and the urban history of Rio de Janeiro, combining ambitious Beaux-Arts city planning with a remarkable visual record of the Brazilian capital at the end of the 1920s.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
