Description

A rare wall map showing a chronological tree of French and English historical events from the year of the birth of Christ until 1700. The map is prepared by Jérôme André Martignoni.

Martignoni published his "Explicatio de la carte historique de la France et de l'Angleterre, depuis la naissance de Jesus-Christ jusqu'à l'an MDCC." in Rome in 1721. This book introduced a completely new method of teaching history, which according to the author in his explanatory preface teaches history in an easy, comprehensible, and all-encompassing manner by means of historical maps composed in a special methodical way.

Complete title in top : Carte Historique de la France et de l'Angleterre depuis la naissance de Jesus-Christ jusqu'à l'an Milseptcent qui contient en abrégé les evenements principaux de ces deux royaumes pendant l'Empire Romain, l'origine, l'accroisement, la diminution, la fin la grandeur d'eux-mêmes, et des autres royaumes, et principales Seigneuries, les Rois, les titres de chaque domaine, les dignitez, les blasons, la géographie et la chronologie avec un triple moyen d'apprendre les histoires, scavoir de succes, en succes, de siecle, et de seigneurerie en seigneurie par André Martignoni .

The map has in the upper left corner an inset map of "modern" England and in the right upper corner "modern" France. The Channel and the Mediterranean are filled with ships and a scale. In the lower part, the map continues with parts of North Africa, filled with dromedaries, elephants, etc.

We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
