Description
Large two sheet copper engraving of the Amphitheater of Verona after a design of Adriano Cristofali. On three sides it is surrounded by architectural details interspersed at the bottom by a short description and a legend. The Amphitheater in the center is freely inspired in content and style by the etching by Louis Dorigny published by Valentino Masieri in 1696. Masieri, custodian of the Arena, printed n 1747 a famous series of six great views, which became a source of inspiration for all subsequent Verona prints.
Signed in the plate "Adriano Cristofali drawn" in the lower right, "Dion.io Valesi incise" and "Francesco Masieri" just above on the left. The print is dedicated to "NOBLE LORDS PROVEDITORS, AND COUNCIL OF THE MAGNIFICENT CITY OF VERONA, AND PRESIDENTS OF THE RENA"
The eighteenth century was the century of the Grand Tour, in which Verona became one of the main "entrance doors" to the Roman age for travelers from all over Europe. The Arena clearly represented the center of this great celebration of the ancient face of Verona and was worthily portrayed in numerous prints and engravings, with intents not only artistic and popular but also, in some cases, scientific: so it was, in this famous panel composed in 1744 by the architect Adriano Cristofali, which stands out over the others for its originality and accuracy in faithfully reproducing many construction details, including the basements as they were known at the time.
Built in the first century, the Verona Arena is an open-air Roman amphitheater that’s still fully in use today, making it one of the best-preserved ancient structures in the world.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
