Description
Copper engraved city plan by Lodivico Guicciardini and published by Johannes Janssonius. Features the bird's-eye details of the city of Arnhem. Includes a prominent strap-work cartouche and a lion coat of arms.

Johannes Janssonius (1588 – 1664)or Jan Janszoon in Dutch, was a Dutch cartographer who lived and worked in Amsterdam in the 17th century. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius the very famous cartographer.
Janssonius produced his first maps in 1616 with the subject of France and Italy. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases under the names Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Atlas was steadily enlarged and renamed “Atlas Novus”. In 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu.
Janssonius' maps were similar to Blaeu’s, and he is often accused of copying his rival, but in truth many of Janssonius’ maps predated those of Blaeu. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major. Editions were printed in Dutch, Latin, French and German. After Janssonius's death, the publishing company was continued by his son-in law, Johannes van Waesbergen.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
