1572 BRAUN, G. / HOGENBERG, F. - Beautiful and early town-plan of Paris with title cartouche and figures in the foreground
Description
Beautiful and early town plan of Paris with title cartouche and figures in the foreground. The Bastille appears at the upper center of the engraving, and Notre-Dame Cathedral sits at the eastern end of the island.
Though published in 1572, the map actually depicts Paris as it stood around 1530. It was copied from a lost, massive wall map known as the "Premier Plan" (created between 1523 and 1530). As a result, it includes details like city gates built by Philip II Augustus that had already been demolished by the time the atlas was printed.
Cartouche decorated with three figures at lower left. The plan is oriented with north on the left. Latin text on verso.
From: Civitates Orbis Terrarum, Vol I, c.1572 or later.
Scarce to find in such outstanding condition. One of the most celebrated sixteenth-century bird’s-eye views of Paris, published in the first volume of Braun and Hogenberg’s monumental Civitates Orbis Terrarum. The city is shown from an elevated viewpoint, with the Seine flowing through the center, the Île de la Cité prominently placed, and the dense urban fabric of medieval and Renaissance Paris rendered in remarkable detail. Major monuments, churches, bridges, and civic buildings are carefully delineated, including Notre-Dame, the royal palace, and the principal fortified gates. The title appears in a large ornamental cartouche at upper left, decorated with the arms of the city of Paris. In the foreground at lower left are three elegantly dressed figures, adding a lively human element to the composition, while verses praising Paris appear at lower right. The Bibliothèque nationale de France records the plate as measuring approximately 34 × 48.3 cm and dates the earliest issue to 1572. Braun and Hogenberg’s Civitates Orbis Terrarum was the first great printed atlas devoted entirely to city views and plans. Published in six volumes between 1572 and 1617, it became one of the most important visual records of European urban life during the Renaissance.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
