Description
Scarce bird’s-eye view of Culemborg (Gelderland) by Hendrik Jansz. Verstralen. Some sixty years after Van Deventer, in 1621, the Utrecht land surveyor Hendrik Jansz. Verstralen produced a bird’s-eye view of Culemborg. Almost a century later, an unknown engraver updated the original copperplate and, based on it, published a revised version of the map around 1714. Hendrik Verstralen was a land surveyor and cartographer, as well as a draughtsman and printer. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, he was also a bookseller in Utrecht. He received commissions primarily from the collegiate churches of Utrecht to map their estates in the Sticht Utrecht. It is not known whether Verstralen made the map on commission or at his own commercial risk, intending to sell it in his shop. In any case, the map is dedicated to Floris van Pallandt II, Count of Culemborg from 1598 to 1639. In a small cartouche beneath his coat of arms, in the upper left-hand corner, his titles are listed in order of importance.
Many people would take this map to be a map by Blaeu, and understandably so, since Blaeu also published a virtually identical map of Culemborg. However, he copied Verstralen’s map.
It is particularly remarkable that the Elisabeth Orphanage Museum still preserves the original copperplate used to print the 1621 map, and that the same plate was later used to produce an updated version. Copper is a relatively soft metal, so sections of text or imagery can be hammered out or rubbed away. A new image or text can then be engraved into the plate. This is precisely what happened in this case.

Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
