Description
An especially rare and beautiful map of the Strait of Singapore, with exquisite calligraphy and superb detail of Dutch and Portuguese ships in the Strait of Singapore. It shows only the southern coast of the island (curiously with north-south running in the usual east-west position) and marks Singapore's west coast, "Cust unbekent" (unknown coast).
It seems Europeans had not circumnavigated the island at this time.
The map records a naval battle between the Dutch and the Portuguese, with letters of the alphabet to code the various ships involved. The battle probably took place in 1603.
A Portuguese galleon, the Santa Catherine (possibly ship D and L on the map) was captured by the Dutch and its cargo sold in Amsterdam for a pricely 3.5 million guilders. Depicted are the Dutch ships, Zierickzee, Enkhuysen, Amsterdam and Hollandse Zaan.
Singapore is named "Suica Pora".
The map appeared in the "Grand Voyages", which is the last part actually issued by de Bry (Parts VII to XII appeared only after his death).

Theodore De Bry (1528-1598)
Theodore De Bry (1528-1598), was born in Liege in modern-day Belgium. Around 1570, when the Spanish invaded the Low Countries, he fled to the German city of Strasbourg, where he was set up as a goldsmith and engraver. This experience gave him an anti-Spanish outlook. In 1587, De Bry traveled to London to meet with a Frenchman named Jacques le Moyne. When the first accounts of Dutch, Spanish and British explorers to Asia, South, and North America began to be published in the 1580s, De Bry became interested in producing illustrated editions of these early travel reports.Les Grand Voyages" by Theodore De Bry. Theodore began his compilation of early voyages in 1590, and had published six parts at the time of his death in 1598. His widow, two sons, and another family member continued the work, which comprised a total of fifty-four parts when it was completed in 1630. The publication brought to the European public the first realistic visualization of the exotic world opened up across the Atlantic by the explorers, conquerors and settlers” .

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
