Description
This is one of the most important and detailed maps of Persia produced at the turn of the 18th century, engraved and published by Peter Schenk the Elder (1660–1711) after the scholarship of the Dutch Orientalist Adrian Reland. Its subtitle claims the geography was drafted from the most authoritative Arabic and Persian sources, reconciling native cartographic and textual traditions with existing Dutch mapping of the region — including a corrected, properly north-south orientation of the Caspian Sea, and the first accurate rendering of Persian place names for a European audience.
The map is dedicated to Nicolaes Witsen, the influential Amsterdam mayor, scholar, diplomat, and collector whose patronage shaped much of Dutch geographic publishing at the time. A finely engraved cartouche in the lower left includes a decorative putto chiseling Schenk's imprint and privilege into a stone wall, with the "Schenk Fec." signature confirming his personal hand in the engraving.
Peter Schenk had built his cartographic business in Amsterdam after acquiring plates from Johannes Janssonius in 1694, and this Persia map remained influential enough to be reissued in later states, including a 1722 edition by his son, Peter Schenk the Younger.
Prepared by Adrian Reland (1678-1718), a Dutch orientalist at the University of Utrecht, including the accounts of Nicolas Witsen.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
