Description
An attractive and important miniature map Norway. The map is orientated to the west. The earliest map showing Norway.
Prepared by Petrus Bertius, published in Amsterdam at the beginning of the seventeenth century.
The map features a delightful strap-work title cartouche, and a mileage scale. It is engraved by Petrus Kaerius.
From the Bertius atlas Tabularum geographicarum contractarum.
Bertius (1565-1629) was a Flemish cartographer, theologian, historian and geographer. Although he published much in the fields of history, theology and mathematics, he is perhaps best known as a cartographer. His works were heavily influenced by the earlier works of Mercator, which date from the late sixteenth century. He was connected by marriage to Jacobus Hondius and Pieter van den Keere, both excellent cartographers, who would influence his later life. He was ‘Cosmographer’ to the court of King Louis XIII.
Bernard Langeness (fl. 1598-1609)
The Caert-Thresoor of 1598 set a new standard for minor atlases. Scholars like Petrus Bertius and Jacobus Viverius edited the text. The small maps are extremely well engraved; they are neat and clear and elegantly composed. Barent Langenes, a bookseller and publisher in Middelburg, published the first edition in 1598. Little is known about Langenes, except that he published some travel descriptions. The success must have prompted Jodocus Hondius to make a minor edition of Mercator's Atlas in 1607, although that work was intended for a different category of readers.
the Caert-Thresoor must have been an atlas favored by the general public. The text was rewritten first by Petrus Bertius (1600) and in 1609 by Jacobus Viverius; who wrote an entirely revised Dutch text.
The maps served many purposes in other books published in Amsterdam.
Their contents reflect the level of cartography in Amsterdam at the turn of the century, where up-to-date information on newly discovered regions was readily available. The Caert-Thresoor is a collection of maps to which the text was adapted and not the other way around as is the case with many geographical studies.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
