Description

As Dario Succi notes in the catalogue of the exhibition held in Bergamo, Marieschi. Venezia in scena, the etching depicts the Campo di S. Rocco on the day of its feast (16 August). On this occasion, from the late seventeenth century onwards, an open-air exhibition of works of art was mounted, with paintings by old masters and contemporary artists hung on the surrounding buildings.
Marieschi’s proposal for the façade of the Church of San Rocco—then undergoing renovation—appears highly imaginative and consistent with the artist’s pronounced taste for theatrical scenography. The works on the definitive façade of the church were carried out between 1765 and 1769 under the direction of Bernardino Maccaruzzi, whose design is visible in the third state of the print. In this impression, therefore, the façade appears as Marieschi mistakenly believed it would be executed.
The matrices were inherited in 1757 by Michele’s daughter, Elisabetta, and at an uncertain date – perhaps ten years later – she sold them, most probably to the publisher Teodoro Viero, who numbered them from 1–22.38 The set of matrices passed afterwards into the possession of the publisher Giuseppe Wagner,39 and eventually to Giovanni Maria Pedrali.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
