Description
Very rare atlas published to accompany Exposé des travaux astronomiques et géodésiques exécutés en Russie dans un but géographique jusqu’à l’année 1855. St.-Pétersbourg. The atlas appears to be lacking in most institutional copies, although the catalogues of both the National Library of Russia and the BnF explicitly mention the folio atlas.
This copy lacks the main text volume of the Exposé but comes with the first volume of the Supplement entitled Supplément à l’exposé des travaux astronomiques et géodésiques exécutés en Russie contenant les noms, en langue russe de toutes les positions données au chapitre V. It contains the exact coordinates of 14,531 locations recorded at the time of publication within the territory of the Russian Empire. These locations are chiefly churches and points of the geodetic and triangulation networks.
The atlas includes a map in six double sheets entitled: Carte des triangulations exécutées en Russie; avec l’indication des endroits dont la position a été déterminée astronomiquement. Scale 1:210,000. Engraved at the Depôt de l’Etat-major. The map is accompanied with an explanatory inset “Table des différentes couleurs”, showing with ten different colors the triangulations carried out either under generals and colonels, by captains, or by the academician Struve. The triangulations on the map are therefore color-coded according to their surveyor.
The map shows the triangulation networks and indicates the astronomically determined points (often churches, steeples, towers, etc.).
A major work for the history of geographical sciences, Russian cartography, and the development of modern triangulation systems, as well as for identifying locations and reference points on early Russian maps.
Theodor Friedrich von Schubert (1789–1865) was a Baltic German general and scientist. Born in Saint Petersburg, he was the son of the astronomer Theodor von Schubert. Honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1827). Member of the Russian Geographical Society. Director of the Military Topographic Depot of the Russian General Staff (1832–1843). Founder and first director of the Corps of Topographers. At the age of sixteen he accompanied his father, the astronomer F. I. Schubert, on an expedition to China; he later served in the Russian occupation forces in France (1815–1818).

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
