Description
A scarce map, probably from a late-eighteenth-century English travel journal, showing the latest cartographic discoveries in the Pacific Ocean. The map extends from Southeast Asia and New Holland (Australia) eastward across the Pacific to the islands of Polynesia.
Including the Philippines in the northwest.
This finely engraved chart incorporates the greatly expanded geographical knowledge resulting from the voyages of James Cook and other eighteenth-century explorers, at a moment when the outlines and island groups of the Pacific were being rapidly revised.
Australia is prominently labeled NEW HOLLAND, with the eastern coastline identified as NEW SOUTH WALES, reflecting Cook's exploration of the coast in 1770. New Zealand is shown with the two main islands separated by Cook Strait, while New Guinea, New Caledonia, the New Hebrides, Fiji, Tonga, Tahiti, the Society Islands, the Marquesas and numerous smaller island groups are recorded across the ocean.
Particularly attractive is the density of recently discovered islands and alternative place names, many associated with voyages undertaken during the second half of the eighteenth century. The chart therefore provides an excellent visual record of the European mapping of the Pacific immediately following Cook's voyages.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
