Description
An interesting map of North America, based upon an earlier map by Thomas Engel. His map of North America was issued in his 'Memoires Observations Geographique' in 1765, and it provides a fascinating look at the water courses across North America, with no less than 4 rivers reaching from the Pacific to the Rocky Mountains.
Baron La Hontan's entirely mythical River of the West is shown with only a short distance from Lake des Tahuglanks across the Rockies to the source of the Mississippi.
Two other rivers are seen to begin north of the Bering Strait and duly feed the mythical 'Lake Conibas', popularized by Wytfliet in 1597, with Lake Michinipi passing over the Rockies. Whilst no Northwest Passage is actually shown, the prospect is not discounted. The mid-American water courses are no less compelling, with the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers badly misprojected but still much in evidence.Â
The maps were issued following a extended period of French/Jesuit exploration - commencing with La Salle, Jolliet, Franquelin, Hennepin and La Hontan in the late 17th and early 18th Centuries, and continuing with the systematic search reflected in the maps of Verendrye and others searching for the watercourse between the Mississippi and the Pacific.Â
Wheat notes that the entire west is labeled Allies de Sioux among other interesting features, which is surely a keen Jesuit observation.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
