Description
FIRST BLOCK - Rare world map from Gregor Reisch's Magarita Philisophica, published in Basel in 1583.
In 1544, Peter Apian incorporated a world map into his Cosmographia, based upon Gemma Frisius' larger world map of 1540, of which no known copy exists.
This early world map is significant in the history of the mapping of America. The continents largely follow Mercator's 1541 Globe Gores, although North America is shrunk to a narrow strip and renamed Baccalearium (good Cod Fishing nearby). The Northwest Passage is clearly identified.
South America is designated "America", likely in deference to Waldseemüller's world map of 1513. The Straits of Magellan are shown.
The Gemma Frisius map was believed to have been dedicated to Emperor Charles V. One of the deities at the top of the map bears the Holy Roman Emperor's Double Eagle on its breastplate.
North America appears as a long, slender landmass labeled Baccalearium, referring to the cod-fishing region off the coasts of New England and Canada. It employs a cordiform projection and depicts a distinct northern passage to Asia over the top of North America. In Asia, India and Sri Lanka (Seylan) are noted, as is part of Southeast Asia, with Sumatra noted as Taprobana. The interior of South America features the notations of Canibales near Brazil and Gigantium regio in the southern tip. Africa has few interior details, aside from the prominent twin-lake sources of the Nile, a mention of the Monteslune (Mountains of the Moon), and a lone elephant.
The map's heart-shaped border contains signs of the zodiac.

Paulus Swaen warrants the authenticity of our items and a certificate of authenticity is provided for each acquired lot.
Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
