Description
This is the second state of the first copperplate of Ortelius' map showing the western hemisphere, showing the prominent bulge in the South American coastline. The first, of 1570, had developed several cracks. It is almost identical to the earlier plate. An important map because of its influence on the European perceptions of America.
When the map was first published by Abraham Ortelius at Antwerp in 1570, it was the best map of the Americas available. It was in fact the first of its kind to achieve wide circulation through an atlas. Lower California is correctly shown as a peninsula, and America is separated from Asia in the northwest. In this state, the name of the Azores is corrected to Las Açores .
The Strait of Anian (Anian) features prominently in the extreme northwest. Below the strait lies the province of Quivira, a powerful geographical myth that refers to the fabled Seven Cities of Gold, relentlessly pursued by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado during his grueling 1541 expedition into the American interior.
North America has indigenous and exploratory nomenclature, including Chilaga and Hochelaga in the northeast, which reflect the mid-century French voyages of Jacques Cartier up the St. Lawrence River. The southeastern region of La Florida is prominently named but depicted with an oversized, roughly rectangular peninsula, while the interior Appalachians are suggested by speculative mountain ranges.
South America features a pronounced, anomalous bulge along its southwestern Pacific coastline—a hallmark geographic error that Ortelius would finally correct in his 1587 third plate.

Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
