Description
Frederik de Wit’s beautiful bird's-eye view of the city. The Amstel River is still open water flowing through the city's heart. Only near the Dam has it been covered by Henry Keyser's Exchange and the fish market. The plan shows the major streets and buildings and a panoramic view of the harbor.Â
Without de Wit’s publisher’s inscription.Â
The plan is sumptuously decorated with the coat of arms and seal of the city at the top, a cartouche of mythical beings presided over by Neptune with his trident, and a harbor filled with dozens of sailing ships. Three keys on the sides and bottom center of the map identify 172 places of interest.
The engraver and map-seller, Frederick de Wit, was born in Gouda (Netherlands) in 1630. He published several world atlases, a sea atlas, and an atlas of the Netherlands. Around 1700, Frederick de Wit entered the market with a town atlas, "Theatrum praecipuarum totius Europae urbium". He produced two volumes with a total of 260 plans and views.Â
Most were printed from plates used for Janssonius and Blaeu's town atlases. After he died in 1706, his widow continued the shop until 1709. The plates and stock of De Wit's atlas were sold to Covens & Mortier in 1710, who sold the atlas for an extended period.
The item is located in Zwijndrecht (The Netherlands)Â and can be seen or collected during regular business hours.
Frederik de Wit (1629-1706)
Frederik de Wit was the son of a wealthy knife handle maker (a subcategory of goldsmith) in Gouda. He moved to Amsterdam before 1648, selling art and prints and branching into maps by 1652. De Wit sold both maps of his own design and from other publishers, establishing himself as one of the best and most successful map publishers of the late seventeenth century.De Wit was one of the first to publish an atlas without long passages of descriptive text, allowing him to sell cheaper atlases than other atlases on the market that doubled as learned treatises on the places they described. His widow, Maria van der Wey (1632-1711), continued to operate the business until 1710, when the stock and printing plates were auctioned off. Most of his atlas maps were acquired by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711) and the city views were acquired by Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733).

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
