Georges-Louis Le Rouge (c.1707/1712-c.1790/1794)
Le Rouge was born in Hanover, Germany, as Georg Ludwig, and later adopted the French form of his name. One biography suggests he was probably the son of the French architect Louis Rémy de la Fosse, who supervised his education and trained him as an engineer and architect. He began his cartographic career in the 1730s. He served as a military engineer and surveyor, rose through a series of appointments, and settled in Paris by 1741, where he entered commercial cartography. He was appointed Ingénieur géographe du Roi under Louis XV, also serving under Louis XVI. He was active in Paris, in the rue des Augustins, from about 1740 to 1780. Both his birth and death dates are uncertain: the sources give c. 1707 or c. 1712 for his birth and c. 1790 or 1793/94 for his death. He disappears from the record after the French Revolution.A large part of Le Rouge’s output consisted of re-engraving English maps for French use. He partnered with the English cartographer John Rocque (1709–1762), an important source for English maps, and translated English books and maps into French. He was an ardent Anglophile, and Benjamin Franklin, who met him in Paris, described him as “a proper person.” He was closely connected to the French nobility.
He published in 1748; "Atlas Nouveau Portatif à l’Usage des Militaires et du Voyageur" and from 1768 maps of North America.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
