Description
A highly decorative double hemisphere world map, by
Claes Jansz. Visscher, published in Amsterdam in 1650. This was the "first
map" to be inserted in a Dutch Bible by Visscher and it became the
prototype for several others to be published over the next hundred years.It is also one of the earliest world maps to show some of the discoveries in Australia from Abel Tasman’s first voyage. Australia and Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) are shown, but the north coast of Australia discovered
during Tasman's second voyage of 1644 is not yet shown. Part of Brazil is on
the Eastern Hemisphere.
In the corners, the four continents are shown in
allegorical form with examples of their animal life and inhabitants. Two
celestial spheres are displayed in the Eastern Hemisphere and two diagrams depicting the Ptolemaic and Copernican
theories of the solar system are tucked between the hemispheres.
There is a lengthy annotation
on the discovery of America and recent circumnavigations. Several ships are sailing the oceans. Dutch text on verso: “Kort en klaer Vertoogh der Landtschappen des wereldts, en hoe deselve nae de Zundtvloedt zijn / verdeelt… Ende tot een besluyt, men zal verstaen, datmen / van den afkomsten der volcken seer

We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
