Description
A collection of 95 photographs, of which about 60 photos feature Korea or its people, printed on albumen paper. Captions in French. The others from Thailand, China, India and Cambodia.  Mounted on cardboard with titles in lead pencil. Hold between 2 contemp. covers.

Korea : Among the 60 photo's are photographers of princes, the Korean royal family: several members of the princely families are photographed, especially the king of Korea and the chairman of the board.
Several views of Seoul, its population, the theatre, women, school scenes, royal school scenes, royal pagodas, street scenes, military reviews, the "American Mission", the "Japanese Fair", the corps de Ballet of the Royal Palace.

The other photographs are taken in Thailand (the King of Siam, Shulalongkorn Rama V, Cambodia (views of Cambodia and Angkor), China (Tientsin - Consulat de France à Tientsin – Octobre 1891) and in India.

Very interesting photo album includes a photograph of “the King of Korea and his son” reproduced in Charles Varat Voyage en Corée (1892) and a photograph (or more) by Hippolyte Frandin, who was appointed on 12 July 1890 as Consul and Commissioner of the French Government, replacing Victor Collin de Plancy in this position. He was replaced on 23 December 1895 by Victor Collin de Plancy.
Hippolyte Frandin is famous for his photography of traditional Korea. After returning to France, based on his experience and what he saw back in Korea, he published a book called "En Corée".

Joseph, Hippolyte Frandin arrived in China in 1875 as a student-interpreter. He was the interpreter for the French Consulate in Tianjin in 1880, interim consul in 1883-1884, and first-class counselor of the French legation in 1889. The Biblitohèque Nationale de France (BnF) has an author page on him. They confirm his birth in 1852, but put his death in 1926. His career led him to China (1886-1890), Korea (1890-1896), Columbia (1896-1897) and Ecuador (1897-1902). They also have an album of pictures of an expedition he led, tasked with determining the border between the French colony of Tonkin and China.

Charles Varat went to Joseon, Korea from 1888 to 1889 as an explorer in charge of ethnographic studies mandated by the French Ministry of Education. He later published a report in three parts with a review of the literature on Korea, an account of his travels, and a final part on the "ethnic personality" of the Korean people. Before the publication of this volume, the accounts of his travels were published by the French editor Hachette in 1892 in an illustrated periodical called "Le Tour du Monde" which compiled contemporary accounts of travels worldwide.

Certificate of authenticityWe provide professional descriptions, condition report and HiBCoR rating (based on 45 years experience in the map business)
We fully guarantee the authenticity of items we sell. We provide a certificate of authenticity for each purchased item.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
