Description

A lovely set of biblical maps of the Holy Land and its surrounds and, the Eastern Mediterranean by Cloppenburg, and engraved by Baptista Deuticum. The first map is an early example of the Holy Land, Armenia, eastern Asia Minor and the Middle East, including Cyprus. The map is surrounded by 15 oval and strapwork vignettes illustrating various scenes from the Book Genesis. There is also a wonderful illustration of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, surrounded by woodland and assorted wild and domestic animals. 'Paradise' is situated just to the south of Babylon on the map

The second map by Cloppenburg is that of the region of Canaan. The map is surrounded by 15 biblical scenes of the life of Christ, including the genealogy of Christ, the last supper, the fishes and the loaves, Christ being born in a manger, Christ being crucified, and the appearance of Christ to the disciples after the resurrection. The map has a compass rose a galleon, and a strapwork cartouche surrounding the mileage scales.

The third map covers Israel and Egypt, and the region around the Dead Sea and the Nile Delta. It shows the wanderings of the Children of Israel. Surrounding the map are 15 decorative oval vignettes depicting scenes from the Book of Exodus and the Book of Numbers. Inside the decorative map are two engraved illustrations of the 12 tribes of Israel surrounding a central Tabernacle. The map has a compass rose, a ship and a mileage scale.

The fourth map is a general map of Israel extending from Sidon in the north south to Raphia. North is orientated to the left. The map is divided into the tribes of Israel an littered with place names river, hills and lakes. It is decorated with a hatched sea, a compass rose and a ship. Surrounding the map are 15 decorative oval vignettes of old testament scenes from the Book of Samuel, the Book of Daniel etc, including a scene depicting Daniel and Goliath.

The fifth and final map depicts a map of the eastern Mediterranean Sea; from Italy across to the Middle East, including the Holy land, the tip of North Africa, the Nile Delta, Asia Minor, Cyprus, and Armenia (from Rome to Babylon). It shows the spread of Christianity as reported by the Acts of the Apostles. The map is decorated with a splendid compass rose, a ship and a strapwork cartouche of the mileage scales. The map is surrounded by 15 oval shaped decorative vignettes, some showing the events of the Apocalypse as per the book of Revalations.

A lovely set of thought provoking biblical maps that would grace any home or wall.

Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
