Description
Some buildings are seen in the foreground, in amongst lush local flora, while in the background, there is a large, well fortified Spanish settlement comfortably nestled into a hillside.
Beneath the engraving is a lettered key (a-h) highlighting churches, an entrance gateway, and a building for storing gun powder! The title takes the form of an attractive ribbon banner.
This engraved view appeared in John Ogilby's seminal work America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World. published in London. This in itself is an English translation of Arnold Montanus' Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld. . . which was published in Amsterdam in the same year (1671).
Christopher Columbus landed in Truxillo in the August of 1502, during his fourth and final voyage to The Americas. The history of the modern town begins in 1524, shortly after the conquest of Mexico by Hernan Cortes. Cortes wanted to find a Spanish outpost in the Central American region, and with this in mind, a man named Cristobel de Olid was sent to achieve this task.
In time, he established an inland settlement named Triunfo de la Cruz. Some time later the town was relocated to its present coastal location, due to a large natural harbor. This town was named Truxillo, which went on to become a major port for Spanish shipments of gold and silver, mined in the interior.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
