Description
The island of Tsushima (Japan) between Korea and Japan is colored in yellow, as part of Korea. Tsushima is the closest Japanese territory to the Korean Peninsula, lying approximately 50 km from Busan.
Below Korea and east from China, an unusual denomination for the East China Sea is noted "Mer de Lieu-Kieu, de Corée ou Orientale" (Sea of Ryukyu, of Korea or East Sea).
"In the middle of the 19th century, at the dawn of its colonial expansion, two reasons led France to take an interest in the island of Okinawa. On one hand, it appears both as a possible point of support for its navy in the Far East and as a possible access route to the Japanese market. On the other hand, territory of the kingdom of Ryukyu, and in view of the upcoming opening of Japan, it is the only place more or less related to the Japanese cultural sphere where the presence of Catholic priests has some chance of 'be accepted".
France remained almost absent from the Far East until the 1830s. It was in fact from 1841, under the leadership of François Guizot, Minister of Foreign Affairs and strong man of the government, that a policy was implemented to restore a consular and naval presence in the China Sea.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
