Franz Ritter was an astronomer and cartographer, perhaps best known for his 'sundial' world map. Ritter specialized in designing and manufacturing astrolabes, sundials, and other scientific instruments.
Franz Ritter (Nuremberg, d. 1640) was an astronomer, mathematician, and instrument maker who studied under Johann Praetorius in Altdorf. He's best known for his gnomonic-projection "sundial world map," and for designing astrolabes and horological instruments.
Speculum Solis ("Mirror of the Sun") was his treatise on sundials, comprising a suite of 8 plates (first edition 1607, plates issued 1609–11), each plate actually intended to function as a physical sundial once mounted — which is why surviving examples are very scarce, since the plates were meant for practical use and rarely survived intact.
This is plate No. 3, is titled "Horologium Horizontale Horas a meridie et media nocte Numeratas continens, ad latitudinem XLIX gr. XXIII min." — a horizontal dial calibrated to 49°23' latitude, counting hours from noon and midnight.
Later, in 1660, the Speculum Solis plates were bound together with 15 plates from his Astrolabium (first published 1613) into a combined volume.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
