Description
Second state of this rare and decorative plan of Amsterdam with Visscher's imprint. With a panoramic view seen from the IJ and further insets of Council House, The Exchange, House of the Dutch East India Company and House of the West India Company.
This state figures the fourth extension with the projected growth of the city added to the left half of the sheet; on the west side, the "Realeneiland" has been extended, above the image of the west India House, the imprint of Visscher has been added, and, on the bastion right next to the St. Anthonispoort, a windmill has appeared.
This map appeared at the height of the Golden Age of the Dutch Empire, which was built on its dominance in international finance and the spice trade. Accordingly, the institutions highlighted in the corners of the map are not churches or monasteries but economic institutions such as the stock market, the headquarters of the Dutch West and East India Companies, and the old statehouse.
Dare to go in Black. All early maps are printed in black and white and many were kept that way for a long time. A black and white map in an early and strong impression is a rarity nowadays, being so many colored up recently!

Claes Jansz Visscher (1587-1652)
The founder of the house, Claes Janszoon Visscher from Amsterdam, was not only a talented draftsman, engraver and etcher, but also one of the most important publishers of the 17th century. The events of the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) provided many subjects for new maps and prints. Depictions of sieges, battles, the military situation, the location of the forts, redoubts and lines formed the news of that time. Both news from Europe and news of Dutch activities in Asia and America were central to the prints. The Visscher house would continue to specialize in publishing war maps.
Dating the maps is quite difficult. The news cards were of course usually provided with a year.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
