Description
Detailed manuscript map of Georgia, based upon an 1823 map by Heinrich Julius von Klaproth. The map depicts the central Caucasus, from the Russian frontier fortress of Mozdok in the north to Gori and Tbilisi (Tiflis) in the south. It covers the high mountain barrier between them, the homeland of the Ossetes, Circassians (Tcherkesses), and the Mitzdcheghi, as well as Klaproth’s rendering of the Chechen and neighboring mountain peoples. The Terek River runs north out of the mountains and the Kura (Mtkvari) winds through Georgia. The relief and settlements along the route through the Darial Gorge are shown in impressive detail. Three distance scales are engraved below the image.
An engraved version by Berthe for Klaproth’s Voyage au Mont Caucase et en Géorgie was printed in Paris (1823). The map is based on his own 1807-08 expedition for the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is uncertain whether this is the model for the map or was copied by a contemporary.
Heinrich Julius von Klaproth (1783-1835)
Heinrich Julius von Klaproth (1783-1835) was a leading orientalist and linguist of his age. In 1807-1808, the Russian Academy of Sciences sent him to the Caucasus, only a few years after Russia annexed the Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti (1801). He was among the first scholars to explore, document, and map the region’s languages and peoples. His relations with the Russian authorities soured, and he left Russia for Paris. His travel account first appeared in German (1812-14), then in a greatly expanded French edition, Voyage au Mont Caucase et en Géorgie (Paris: C. Gosselin, 1823). The map accompanied that work. It reflects his own observations as well as later Russian surveys, making it one of the more reliable depictions of the Caucasus available in the early 19th century. The Caucasus was then at the center of Russian expansion and of growing European interest.FAQ - Guarantee - Shipping

Paulus Swaen warrants the authenticity of our items and a certificate of authenticity is provided for each acquired lot.
Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
