Description
A very attractive and desirable map of the Thirteen Colonies and British North America during the American Revolution, combining strong historical interest with impressive visual appeal. An excellent map for collections devoted to early America, the Revolutionary War, the thirteen colonies, Florida or eighteenth-century cartography.
Published by Matthäus Albrecht Lotter in Augsburg, the map shows the thirteen British colonies individually, together with Canada, Nova Scotia and Florida. Towns, forts, rivers, roads and mountain ranges are carefully engraved, while the interior includes numerous Indigenous nations and tribal regions.
The map is especially desirable for its direct connection with the political situation of the 1770s. The thirteen colonies are prominently listed in the title cartouche, making this a particularly evocative representation of North America as the colonies broke away from British rule.
The Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Mississippi system are shown in considerable detail, reflecting European interest in the strategic geography of the continent during the Revolutionary period. The extensive interior nomenclature makes the map valuable for studying colonial expansion and Native American geography.
Maryland is given a very curious shape for the time period. It includes good detail in the Great Lakes region and a few places named in the Ohio Valley, including Logs Town, Twictwees, Ft. Du Quesne, Allegheny, Vinango, Buffaloons, Sandoski, and Mingos. Ft. Necessite is also shown.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
