Description
A fine and detailed map of Limburg and Dalem in the southern Netherlands. Based on the work of Nicholas Sanson, the map highlights the counties and lordships of Faquemont, Rolduc, Salem, Herve, Balen, Sprimont, Monzen and others.
The map is embellished with a beautifully engraved title cartouche, scale of distance, a compass, and remarks.
Nicolas Sanson (1600–1667) was a French cartographer, termed by some the creator of French geography, in which he's been called the "Father of French cartography."
Reinier & Josua Ottens
Reinier & Josua Ottens (Amsterdam, fl. 1726-1765) Joachim Ottens (1663-1719), a copper engraver by training, founded the family's print- and map-selling firm in Amsterdam, becoming a member of the print- and art-sellers' guild in 1710. The shop traded under the sign "In de Wereldcaert" ("In the World Map"). On Joachim's death in 1719, the business passed to his widow and sons, and on 20 October 1726 a formal partnership was established between the two brothers, Reinier (I) and Josua, trading as R. & I. Ottens. The brothers, working from separate premises but under a shared partnership, became one of the leading map-publishing houses in Amsterdam during the second quarter of the eighteenth century, their output flourishing especially between 1719 and c.1750. Much of their business involved reissuing and reworking plates acquired from earlier publishers — notably Guillaume de l'Isle — alongside their own commissions, and they were particularly renowned for the vast made-to-order composite atlases they assembled for wealthy clients, some running to more than 800 separately issued maps and bound in as many as fifteen volumes. Reinier (I) died in 1750; the firm continued as Josua & Reinier Ottens, with Reinier's son (Reinier II) taking his father's place, until Josua's own death in 1765. Josua's widow, Johanna de Lindt, carried the business on with Reinier II until around 1780, finally selling off the remaining stock of plates in 1784. Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
