Description
Showing the British Colonies, from a British perspective and including towns, forts, Indian tribes and villages, roads, trading paths, portages, mines, mountains, lakes, rivers, much important early colonial information, textual annotations of the articles of the Paris Treaty and arrows show prevailing wind direction.
It is embellished with a bold title cartouche featuring Native Americans and indigenous animals.
With the address "Printed for Robert Sayer No. 53 Fleet Street as the Act Directs 2d. July 1775. " in lower right and included in "The American Atlas: Or, A Geographical Description Of The Whole Continent Of America ... "
The claims of the Carolina's, Virginia and Pennsylvania extend to the Mississippi, following the defeat of the French and the Treaty of Paris in 1763. A massive Louisiana appears West of the Mississippi, and Spain dominates Texas and Upper California.
A large inset shows a full size reproduction of the seminal Kino map, which proved California not to be an island. There is also a large inset of Baffin's and Hudson's Bay. The elaborate cartouche is without doubt one of the most decorative cartouches to appear on an 18th Century map of North America. The extensive annotations in the Atlantic Ocean set forth the various articles of the Paris Treaty, which settled the French & Indian War. Excellent detail throughout the map, including Indian Tribes, towns, forts, rivers, villages, mountains, lakes, trading places, portages, and a host of other important early colonial information.

We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
