Louis Brion de la Tour (1743–1803) & Louis Charles Desnos (1725–1805)
Louis Brion de la Tour was "Cartographer Royal" to the King of France, with the official title Ingénieur-Géographe du Roi. Geographicus gives him as (1743–1803) in most listings and (1756–1823) in others, so his dates are uncertain. He drew the maps and designed the decorative frames, and most of his work was published in partnership with Desnos. His maps are known for their elaborate rococo border work and title cartouches.Louis Charles Desnos was an important instrument maker, cartographer, globe maker and publisher in Paris. He was born in Pont-Sainte-Maxence (Oise), the son of a cloth merchant. He married the widow of Nicolas Hardy, son of the map, globe and instrument seller Jacques Hardy. He maintained his offices in the Rue Saint-Jacques. He sent the King roughly 200 livres’ worth of maps, books and atlases each year, in return for a royal title. As a publisher he produced a substantial body of work and is associated with Brion de la Tour and Zannoni (Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni). He had a long history of legal battles with other Parisian cartographers and publishers.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
