Description
Attractive map of the Philippines, Japan, Korea and Indonesia with an inset of the island Guam, by the Jesuit Heinrich Scherer, printed in for Scherer's 'Atlas Novus'. Several fishes and ships decorate the seas.
Large decorative cartouche, large compass rose, sea monsters and sailing ships embellish this map.
Essentially two maps in one. The main map (right side) sweeps from Korea to New Guinea and from Borneo to the Marianas — covering China, southern Japan, the Philippines, and parts of Indonesia. The map features a Jesuit-themed title cartouche, galleons under sail, and sea monsters in the Pacific.
Scherer's atlases are known for their distinctly Catholic/Jesuit iconography and thematic slant — several volumes trace the history of the Jesuit order itself. Guam's oversized presence reflects that religious emphasis: the island had only recently been Christianized by Jesuit missionaries (following Magellan's 1521 encounter and Legazpi's 1565 claim, but real settlement and conversion came much later), so its prominence reflects mission history more than geographic importance.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
